Developing A Strong Spirit
Proverbs 18:14
“The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, But who can bear a broken spirit? “
To reveal to you from the Word of God that having a strong spirit is
essential to your success in life
- What is the spirit of a man?
1 Thessalonians 5:23
“ Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”
You are a tripart being. You are a spirit, you have a soul, who live in a body.

Open the eyes of my spirit. – Ephesians 1:18
Many people make the mistake of thinking that their mind or soul is their spirit and never develop their spirit to be able to receive God’s promises.
You are a spirit who has a soul which is made up of will, mind and emotion and who live in this body.
We have learned what is the spirit of the man but let us go even further and see what is a strong spirit.
What is a strong spirit?
Romans 4:17-22
“17 (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”[a]) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; 18 who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, “So shall your descendants be.”[b] 19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. 20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. 22 And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
- Abraham believed in hope.
- Not weak in faith.
- Not considering his body or circumstance
- Not wavering at the promise of God through unbelief.
- Strengthen in faith, giving glory to God and being fully convinced that what God has promised, He was also able to perform.
- A week spirit has no word faith or little amount of word.
- A strong spirit is a spirit which being developed through
spending time in the Word of God.
- A strong spirit can stand up to any circumstance and overcome it.
Notice :
1 Timothy 4:15
“Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.”
So far we have learned:
- What is a spirit
- What is a strong spirit
Now let’s see why is it important to have a strong spirit.
- Why is it important to have a strong spirit?
Mark 4:10-15
“And He said to them, “To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables, 12 so that
‘ Seeing they may see and not perceive,
And hearing they may hear and not understand;
Lest they should turn,
And their sins be forgiven them.’”[a]
13 And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.”
The ground that the Word is talking about is your spirit or heart.
Notice, three types of grounds or hearts did not received because they did not take time to strengthen what they believe.
Proverbs 25:28
“Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.”
Proverbs 16:32
“He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”
We see that it is important to have a strong spirit, because if we do not have a strong spirit the enemy will defeat you.
We have learned :
- What is a spirit of a man?
- What is a strong spirit?
- Why it is important to have a strong spirit?
Now let us see how to have a strong spirit.
- How to have a strong spirit?
Joshua 1:8
“8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
1. The way you develop a strong spirit is through meditating on the Word of God.
Not committed to memory, but the Word live and practice.
Notice verse 9. God have always commanded us to be strong, but we cannot be strong if we do not know His promises concerning our situation.
2. Another way to develop a strong spirit is by putting on the armor of God.
Ephesians 6:10-18
“10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[a] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints”
Notice verse 16 – Taking the shield of faith which is able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
Your spirit needs to be filled with God’s Word and ready to commit to action.
3. Praying in the Holy Ghost
Jude 1:20
“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,”
4. Praising God will get your spirit filled and strong
Ephesians 5:18
“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,”
5.Proverbs 24:10
“If you faint in the day of adversity, Your strength is small.”
Nehemiah 8:10
“…for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
Proverbs 17:22
“A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones.”
Proverbs 12:25
“Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.”
David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.
1 Samuel 30:6
“Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.”
